American Black Duck

American Black Duck Anas rubripes

    American Black Ducks are so prone to interbreeding with Mallards Anas platyrynchos that it always a pleasure to see pure individuals of this species. Today at Long Branch Park six were present.





    A little farther out in Lake Ontario many Buffleheads Bucephola albeola were riding the waves.

    I love your Black Duck images, David. Sorry to hear that they've a tendency to interbreed with Mallards. This seems to be something that, for some reason, is far more common between ducks (and geese) than any other group of birds. In my experience, in UK there are 'hot spots' of interbreeding where nearly every duck you see seems to be a hybrid. Fortunately these aren't too common.

    You're tempting me with those Buffleheads again!!
