Sandhill Cranes at Grass Lake

        One of the great reasons to rejoice in this area is the breeding success of Sandhill Crane Grus canadensis. The Grass Lake area contains a thriving population and the numbers seem to increase each year. Today, peering through driving rain interspersed with pellets of ice, I counted thirty-one at Bannister Lake (although there may well have been more) and four were in a field at the very edge of Waterloo County, just on the Waterloo side of the Brant-Waterloo Road.
     It was impossible to get close to the birds and the following photographs are all I could manage. It is a fitting record, however, of a truly magnificent species.

    Gee, I have the same problem to get close to these!
    Nevertheless, their observation is still quite exiting!
