A Snowy Day in Waterloo

14 February 2015

Not having captured too many decent images of birds recently, or other wildlife for that matter, I am turning to the state of the weather for this post.
It is a snowy day in Waterloo and I have already shovelled my driveway clean once, and no doubt I will have to repeat the performance before the day is over. Right now it is snowing and the wind is blowing fiercely.
Here is what my house looks like.

You can see that the driveway is clear - for now at least. I am sure that by early afternoon it will have two or three more centimetres of snow accumulated on it, and if the wind continues to howl it will cause some drifting.
The path to the front entrance is passable - for now!

As you will note, we have had considerable snow recently, and some of the snow piles at the sides of my driveway and at the front of the house attest to the amount of snow clearing I have been doing.

This is what the sidewalk looks like looking down the street from the bottom of the driveway.

Each homeowner is responsible for keeping the sidewalk clear and navigable for pedestrians; if you neglect to do it the city sends a bobcat to do it and then your bill follows in the mail!

These are views looking both ways along the street.

The most frustrating thing of all is that later in the day, after the main thoroughfares have been cleared, the municipal snow plough will come along the street and its blade will dump a whole wall of snow from the pavement in front of everybody's drive. Then you have to get rid of all of that mess before you can drive out.
I guess this is the price we pay for living where we do!

  2. What can I say except "commiserations". Looking on the bright side all that physical exercise should do wonders for muscles, not to mention the middle age spread.

Over here I cant imagime that anyone would ever pay the Local Authority for moving snow. You Canadians are so law abiding.

  3. The snow is beautiful to see your photos too.
But if you are experiencing so much work will it be nice anymore, wish you strength.
    Nice weekend, greetings Tinie

  4. Hello David. It is a beautiful sight, all that snow. But it also gives a lot of annoyance.
I enjoy your photos and wish you success with the cleanup. It's a lot of work!

  5. Muy bonito pero tanta nieve es un gran problema, aquí también nos ha nevado mucho y hasta los ciervos de las montañas se están muriendo porque no pueden alimentarse. A ver si llega pronto el buen tiempo. Un abrazo desde España.

  6. So much snow do you have there.
It's a lot of work to keep the driveway clear of snow.
Here in the Netherlands no snow, it's cold today.
    Have a good Sunday, David.

  9. Oh dear!
That is a lot of snow!
And one has better be in good shape to shovel it all out of the way otherwise beware of the bill!!!!
If we get 10 cm in a winter it is a maximum but again it does not happen every year!
So sure, I try to make the most of when it happens!
At least now I have an idea of you live :)
Keep well David, hugs to the both of you :)

  11. SO much snow! I have never lived anywhere with that much and I think those of you who do are so brave! Yes, to answer your question on my blog, we do have Mosquitos sometimes in Florida, but putting on bug spray is easier than shoveling snow ))). We used to live in Oregon and had occasional snow, but nothing like yours. Beautiful pictures however.

  12. I hoped in the Netherlands for some more snow but we got almost no snow. When I see what has fallen to you then that's a bit too much. Nice to see your driveway as well as a lot of work to create snow!

  13. I admire your dogged persistence and energy with your snow-clearing activities, David. Fortunately we don't see snow like that in this neck of the woods (famous last words!!!). Greetings from a wet UK (it's rained non-stop for the past six hours and looks set to continue for the next six at least!).
