Ornithoffice

     I have a pretty substantial library, mainly ornithology, but with a decent representation of other taxa also - pretty much all of the natural world is covered, on the surface of the earth and above and below it, on the oceans and below them too. If it creeps, crawls, swims or flies I've got it covered!
    Until recently I had but a series of cheap shelves, totally inadequate to the weight they were asked to hold, and every so often I would go down to my office first thing in the morning to find that shelves had collapsed and books were all over the floor. Needless to say, this grieved me greatly.
     At some point, during our recent trip to Slovenia and Croatia, I was bemoaning this fact to Jim Huffman, who is masterful woodworker by any standards, and he said, "You should have told me earlier, I would have built you something." And so started a venture to custom build bookshelves for me, anchored right into the frame of the house, designed to hold a tank and capable of withstanding earthquakes!
     Here is Jim, artisan par excellence, standing in front of the first section he installed.

     Not only did he construct bookshelves designed to hold my books in the most effective fashion, he used every inch of space available and made them floor to ceiling, and in the process fashioned items of rare quality and beauty. To say that I am delighted with the result would be the understatement of the year.
    

     It gave me the opportunity to reorganize everything, all is on the shelves in accordance with current taxonomy, and other books are organized in the fashion that suits the way my mind works so that everything is always at hand.

     As you will see below, by maximizing the space available, I have much empty space that I did not have before.

   
     No doubt this will motivate all of you to rush out and acquire books to send to me so that I can use my empty space to great advantage!
